TMD or TMJ Dysfunction

TMJ Dentist San Diego

Do you suffer from headaches, jaw joint pain, popping, or clicking?tmj-dentist-san-diego

Many people suffer from TMD or TMJ and don’t even know there are safe and easy ways to get out of pain fast.  Jaw pain can affect your life and stop you from doing things in your daily routine. I am a TMJ dentist San Diego and here to help. Whether you clench or grind at night or during the day, relief from pain can be as simple as wearing a splint that relieves pressure in the jaw joints. Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD or TMD), or TMJ syndrome is a term that covers acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint. This jaw joint is located in front of each ear. It is a complex joint that has many muscles controlling it. Many people experience severe pain in and around the joint for a number of reasons. The pain can be reoccurring and severe.

san-diego-tmj-dentistSymptoms of TMJ or TMD Dysfunction are:

  • Migraines or headaches
  • Sharp pain in the area of the joint
  • Muscle spasms in the neck, back, and shoulders
  • Reduced ability to open the mouth or locking of the jaw
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Discomfort with biting or chewing

It is important you do not ignore these symptoms. Persistent grinding or clenching of the teeth can cause wear and damage to the teeth. This damage cannot be reversed without reconstructive dental treatment. It also causes the muscles to be over worked and in turn they get fatigued and go into spasm. This is when the pain begins. An appliance can be made to wear over the teeth that will allow the muscles to rest, protect the teeth, and reduce the symptoms. There are many ways to treat these symptoms that are not invasive. Other options in addition to wearing a splint are muscle therapy, prevention exercises and chiropractics.

Since treating over 3,000 complex cases I have become an expert in the field. In addition to traditional TMJ therapies, I have successfully treated my patients by reconstructing their bites. Many dental professions are limited by the lack of services offered in their practice. I can also advise you on the possibility of treating your pain with orthodontics. Having a deep or collapsed bite can cause pain that will never improve unless treated. If you are not the type of person to want orthodontic treatment your bite can also be relieved with dental restorations.
