Mercury & Metal-Free Dentistry

Dr. George continues to expand his holistic dentistry services as new, tested and proven materials become available. In 1985, he was one of the first dentists to become mercury-free when the use of holistic composites fillings for posterior teeth became available.  Mercury is a heavy metal that’s toxic to humans. However, for many years dentists have placed metal/amalgam dental fillings, and these contain trace amounts of mercury. The Food and Drug Administration has gone back and forth over the potential health risks of mercury fillings. Today, the FDA recommends that children, pregnant women, and people with mercury sensitivity avoid amalgam dental fillings.

To ensure that our patients have healthy dental work, Dr. George has opted to eliminate the use of metal amalgam in our dental office. Instead, we use metal-free, mercury-free composite resin fillings. These safe and reliable fillings are tinted to blend with the color of natural tooth enamel, so they look natural, which is a bonus to their holistic benefits.

The mercury-amalgam issue is only one point in holistic dentistry. Holistic (or Biological/Integrated) dentistry is best described as a comprehensive approach to dental health, making use of the most up-to-date research and technologies, while working hand-in-hand with the traditional knowledge of the “alternative” approaches to health. Through continued education, Dr. George offers his San Diego and La Jolla patients the most current treatments in integrated dentistry.
